The government has announced an emergency ‘Trick or Treat’ tax for children that will come into force with immediate effect.

With Chancellor Rachel Reeves announcing a string of tax rises in this week’s budget, for everything that they can think of to raise up to £40bn in revenue, news has emerged today that she has thought of something else to tax.

Speaking earlier, Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed, “I can’t believe we forgot about this! We can now confirm a Trick or Treat tax of 40% on all money and sweets, because we’ve decided 7-year-old’s aren’t ‘working people’.

“We can also confirm that the tax will come into effect retrospectively, so anything earned by children from midday yesterday is subject to this new taxation.

“Obviously some people, in particular children, will be unhappy with our decision, but they are not classed as ‘working people’ so we are allowed to tax them because this definitely won’t break any manifesto pledge.

“We do however appreciate all the hard work that children go to in preparing for Halloween and going around to houses, so we will have an initial threshold of £0.50p or 1 pack of Haribo before they have to pay any tax on the earnings above that level.”

Asked if there is any form of tax relief for the cost of outfits and dressing-up materials used in their endeavours, we were told, “No. Offering tax breaks for behaving entrepreneurially? Are you mad!”
