‘I just hope Pulp stay true to their working-class principles’ says fan living in £2m London townhouse

A concerned Pulp fan is hoping the band remain true to their working class principles and ideals with their new album release.
Lifelong fan, Simon Williams, 50, an Eton boarder and Oxbridge graduate, now with a merchant banking firm, and living in £2m townhouse in Hoxton, East London is excited by the news of the band’s first studio album in 24 years.
However, he just hopes that it maintains the band’s tongue in cheek, humorous yet sincere feel, that drew him to love the band in the first place in the 1990s.
“When Different Class was released in 1995, it was as if Jarvis Cocker was talking to me directly,” admitted Williams, reclining with a cigar in a lounge in The Garrick Club.
“Well, not directly to me, he’d obviously have had to speak to the housemaster of the time at Eton, and one of my fags would have come up and conveyed his message to me. But you get what I mean.
“The lyrics of that album really get across the band’s obvious early struggles with poverty, unemployment and how they just about managed to maintain a living in a depressed Northern city. Not dissimilar to the travails I encountered myself when I was sent down to Oxford to study PPE.” continued Williams.
“Maintaining my membership fees for the Bullingdon Club as well as a Wimbledon debenture was a frightful balance and left me near the bread line some months to be honest.
“That line in Common People where he says he’s watching roaches climb the wall. That’s exactly what me, Tarquin and Sniffer faced in our student flat except for us it was Hockneys and Van Goghs on the wall as we climbed up the stairs – my late papa was a prodigious art collector in the 1990s.
“The only sentiment I don’t agree with is their ‘You’ll never fail like common people do, and watch your life slip out of view’,” concluded Williams, ordering another 20-year-aged single malt from his leather seat.
‘Very cynical and simplistic viewpoint, that. Hope there’s none of that shite in the new album.”
