Simon Williams has today admitted that he’s struggling to remember the name of the diver who won an Olympic gold medal with Tom Daley just 36 hours ago.

Williams, who claims to take great interest in ‘the diving’ for a few days every four years, insists the name is on the tip of his tongue, and he can picture his face quite clearly.

“Look, I’m not a commentator, so it’s not my job to remember names, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable for me to remember Tom, but not the other one.

“I could definitely pick him out of a line-up.  Well, as long as the other person in the line-up is Tom Daley.

“He was really good too, by the way, exactly the same as Tom in fact, which I have learned is a really important aspect of the synchronised diving event.

“I’m sure all those years of training and early morning practise now seem well worth it for… for… I want to say ‘Lee’? Is it Lee something? Lee Matthews maybe?”

Meanwhile, Matty Lee, the brand new Olympic gold medalist and diving partner of Tom Daley, has admitted he is perfectly happy being known as Tom Daley’s diving partner.

He told us, “Sure, I doubt anyone outside of the diving community would have heard of me a week ago, and let’s be honest, how many people get to win an Olympic gold medal and be the subject of a popular pub quiz sports question for the next couple of decades?

“It’s win-win as far as I’m concerned.”
