Durham have dropped a second major bombshell in the space of 24 hours by appointing Skeletor to advise on ‘all cricket-related operations’.

The County Championship Second Division club have chosen the evil cartoon overlord to help new captain Cameron Bancroft lead next season’s promotion challenge.

Durham have chosen Aussie opener Bancroft as skipper just a year after his role in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal that rocked Test cricket.

He was banned for nine months for using sandpaper in an infamous ball-tampering plot but will nevertheless assume a key leadership role in Chester-le-Street.

Now the county have risked further criticism by choosing Skeletor to join a new-look backroom staff.

Bancroft’s vice-captain is yet to be selected, but Sideshow Bob, Dennis the Menace and Mumm-ra are understood to be in the running.

A club spokesman said: “We are taking a different direction for next season and we believe Skeletor’s reputation for fair play sets the right tone for the 2019 campaign.

“He will advise the players and coaches on all cricketing matters, with a particular emphasis on fair play and the spirit of the game.

“Skeletor is a busy man with a packed diary of nefarious engagements, so we are delighted he will be able to spare us some time to help create the right environment.

“When he is not plotting to claim Castle Greyskull, Skeletor will be on hand to help formulate strategies to outwit Middlesex, Northamptonshire and Derbyshire.”
