Villas-Boas: “My mum still backs my plan for Chelsea”
15 years agoUnder-fire Chelsea boss André Villas-Boas has hit back at critics, saying that his mum still supports his plans for the football club.
Following a 3-1 defeat to Napoli, the beleaguered manager defended his team selection, saying, “You can have your opinion but it was based on what was the best team in my thoughts.
“And my mum agrees with me, so there.”
The Portuguese manager, who has lost the support of the fans, the players, the media, the groundsmen, the coach driver, the club mascot, the turnstile staff, the stewards and the woman who cuts up the half-time oranges, claimed that his mum still completely backed his long-term vision for the club.
At a press conference, the under-pressure boss, whose request for public backing from trigger-happy chairman Roman Abramovich has been met with ominous silence, proudly showed reporters a ‘World’s Best Football Manager’ mug that his mother gave him after the latest defeat.
“She says I’m her brave little soldier”, said Villas-Boas, who at 34 is by far the youngest manager in the Premier League, “And that sticks and stones may break your bones, but having 40,000 of your own supporters shouting for Guus Hiddink will never hurt you”.
Chelsea, who haven’t won in five matches, could only draw with Birmingham in the FA Cup, face elimination from the Champions League and a struggle to finish in the top four of the Premier League, paid Porto £13m compensation for the Portuguese manager, but he has struggled to make an impact in England, despite his mum’s backing.
Sadly, not all of Villas-Boas’s family share his mother’s support, his father telling reporters, “Why did the stupid twat drop Lampard? He’ll feel the back of my hand when I get home.”
