Man wistfully recalls when ‘Brexit’ just sounded like a funny breakfast cereal name

Local man Simon Williams today wistfully recalled the times when ‘Brexit’ just sounded like a funny breakfast cereal name, rather than a complete and utter shit-show that has divided the entire country.
“It wasn’t that long ago, really, was it, the funny breakfast cereal name thing?” he mused.
“Maybe 18 months or so?
“We just called it the EU referendum before that, then one day we saw the word ‘Brexit’ in the newspaper.
“It sounded like a funny breakfast cereal name, didn’t it?
“We all laughed about it – it was like ‘breakfast’ with a bit of ‘Weetabix’ thrown in.
“Of course, we’d heard the portmanteau ‘Grexit’ before, so we understood what it meant, even if it was a bit of an awkward neologism, but we just thought we’d hear the word for a few months, then never hear it again.
“Maybe in ten years’ time we’d be at a pub quiz, and the question would be, ‘What did “Brexit” mean?’ and we’d all say, ‘Oh yes – “Brexit”! It sounded like a funny breakfast cereal name, didn’t it?’ and we’d all have another laugh about it.
“But we’re not laughing now.”
