Titanic captain calls for “period of stability” after hitting iceberg
9 years agoThe captain of the Titanic tonight called for a “period of stability” after sailing the ship at full steam into a massive iceberg.
The captain was warned of the likelihood of icebergs ahead, but decided to plough on in a never-changing course regardless of the consequences, believing that the ship was not only unsinkable, but would reach its destination in record time.
As terrified passengers hurled themselves into an insufficient number of lifeboats, the captain patrolled the decks with a megaphone, telling people that what was needed now was stability, and that only the captain could provide that.
“I got us into this mess and I’m going to get us out of it,” the captain added as people died all around.
Distress flares were launched and desperate wireless messages broadcast in the hope of another ship arriving to save the stricken vessel, but to no avail.
Survivors reported that even after the ship had sunk beneath the waves, a ghostly voice could still be heard, echoing, “Strong and stable… Strong and stable…”
