Amber Rudd launches stand-up career with ‘judge us on our record’ joke

Amber Rudd hinted at starting a promising side-career in comedy yesterday with a cracking gag about the failings of her own party.
The Conservative Home Secretary had the audience rolling in the aisles during the BBC leaders’ debate yesterday when she joked that viewers should judge the Tory party on their political record before heading to the polls.
At the BBC election debate in place of Theresa May – who did not participate after handing in a note from her mum – Ms Rudd was asked about the absence of costings in the Conservative Party’s manifesto.
“Well I would say in answer to that question, judge us on our record,” Ms Rudd replied, prompting the entire room and viewers nationwide to burst out laughing.
Christopher James, a professor of wit at Oxford University told reporters today, “Who knew that Amber Rudd, the ice cold Home Secretary, could be so funny?
“We expected her to spend the evening laying into Jeremy Corbyn, but we never anticipated her displaying this level of self-deprecating good humour.”
He continued, “To be able to make a reference in a serious debate to the years of Tory cuts to schooling and social care and the disastrous increasing privatisation of the NHS shows that she can be funnier than we ever thought possible.
“It’s almost as if the Tories have a shred of self-awareness, or even humanity.
“Well, almost.”
