A 38-year-old man training for his first-ever marathon assures his wife it has nothing to do with the impending arrival of their firstborn child.
Simon Williams, who has never even taken part in a 5k fun run, has suddenly decided to spend the next 20 weeks dedicating all his free time to not being in the house.
Simon has assured his wife that he’s been thinking of running marathons for some time and his decision to start now, right at the point of her having the baby, is only a question of coincidence.
He told us, “I’ve been thinking about getting into running for say, the last nine months or so. Loads of my mates have recently taken up running and my dad was a big runner too. All of my earliest memories are of hearing my dad leave the house early in the morning, or come back late in the day in his sweaty running kit.”
Simon appreciates the timing isn’t perfect, but is sure his wife will understand.
He went on, “It’s a real shame I’m not going to be around much in those first few months. My job’s quite stressful too, so I’m probably going to have to get up at 5am to run to work, then won’t be back till around 9pm, if I run home.
“I need to get those hours in you see, if you’re going to do a marathon it’s really important to do it properly.
“It’s going to be really difficult for me not seeing much of our son, I just hope my wife can be supportive,” Simon concluded.
