The news that Dec will present Saturday Night Takeaway on his own on March 31st means that British TV’s longest-running whodunnit is coming to an end.
The double act of Ant and Dec has been inseparable on screen since 1989, with viewers continually wondering which one is which, leading to elaborate fan theories appearing on the Internet.
Long-time viewer Simon Williams said, “I think Dec’s the one on the right. But my girlfriend reckons he’s the one on the left.”
But the news that Ant has been arrested for drink driving and will not appear on screen with his regular co-host means that the mystery will finally be laid to rest in a thrilling two-part season finale.
Millions of viewers are expected to tune in to find out the results of the decades-long enigma, with viewing figures expected to reach record highs not seen since audiences finally found out who shot JR.
Williams said, “The ‘Ant or Dec’ question has been going on longer than who killed Laura Palmer, who shot Mr Burns, or wondering when they’re going to find the body under the patio in Brookside, but we’re finally going to find out.”
Bookies have been reporting record takings on the event, with an even 50/50 split between punts on Ant being the one on the right, or the one on the left.
TV execs are remaining tight-lipped though, with rumours even circulating that two versions of the show are being filmed to keep the surprise intact until the last possible moment.
