EastEnders is the favourite to pick up the award for the most realistic storyline featuring a gas explosion, a shooting, arson, an ambulance crash and a pretend brain tumour.
The popular BBC soap, which follows the lives of ordinary people as they unsuccessfully try to avoid life-changing tragedies, unleashed the explosive episodes last week.
Viewers took to social media to praise the soap’s handling of the storyline.
“As someone who’s been in an ambulance that’s collided with a lorry after being accidentally shot in the midst of a gas explosion, it’s good to see the subject being tackled so sensitively,” enthused fan Simon Williams.
Miriam Davies from Cheltenham said: “We all know someone who’s set fire to their dad’s restaurant in an attempt to kill their stepmother because they’re being blackmailed by their girlfriend’s father who is exacting revenge on the people who knowingly stood by as he was imprisoned for a murder he didn’t commit.
An Albert Square spokesperson revealed that the show’s writers are delighted by the response and also hinted at an upcoming storyline.
“It’s an honour just to be considered for the coveted Best Gas Explosion, Shooting, Arson, Ambulance Crash, Pretend Brain Tumour Episode award,” he said.
“We’re also hopeful of making the Best Pub Lightning Strike, Incestuous Love Triangle, Wedding Kidnap, Bridge Collapse Episode category.”
