Steve Bannon supporters mistaking ‘freedom of speech infringement’ with ‘everyone thinks he’s a dick’
8 years ago
Supporters of Steve Bannon have today insisted the revocation of his invitation to speak at an event arranged by the New Yorker magazine is an infringement on his freedom of speech, rather than a public demonstration of the fact that lots of people think he’s a dick.
Bannon had been due to be interviewed by the magazine’s editor David Renwick at the New Yorker Festival, but that invitation was rescinded when it became clear how many attendees think Bannon is a dog-whistling gas-lighting dick.
Fans of Bannon have said that not letting him appear on the stage in front of paying customers to talk about some of the distasteful things he believes in is an affront to the first amendment, with some of them laughably insistent that this is the case.
However, festival organiser Chuck Williams explained, “Steve Bannon is quite free to go and stand on a box in the park and talk at length about his views on nationalist identity, globalisation and the failure of immigration – we’ve just decided that we’re not going to give him a microphone and a spot on our stage to say it.
“You can tell it’s not infringing on his first amendment rights because no-one from the government has come to take him away for saying the things he wants to say.
“He is literally free to say whatever he likes, just not on our stage.”
Bannon Supporter Travis Matthews told us, “The constitution says you have to listen to whatever garbage I make up – it’s the law of America. I know that’s true because I read it on the Infowars website.”
