£400,000 was an unconditional gift, claims SNP’s Peter Murrell

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has insisted the £400,000 he embezzled from the party was actually an unconditional gift.

Murrell was found to have embezzled the money between 2010 and 2022, buying everything from coffee machines to luxury watches, though he now maintains the funds were an unconditional gift from the Scottish National Party.

“I’ve told you, it was an unconditional gift and nothing more,” said Murrell, after witnessing how ‘unconditional gift’ ended all questions about dodgy sources of money for Nigel Farage.

“Or if the unconditional gift angle doesn’t work, then it was a reward for campaigning for Scottish independence all these years.

“Either way, I’m completely innocent of any wrongdoing. It’s basically just a witch hunt to make me look bad. Same old same old.

“So what if the SNP didn’t know they were giving me the unconditional gift and so what if I put a Rolex down as a ‘work lunch’? That doesn’t mean I didn’t deserve it. Scottish politicians get paid an absolute pittance, especially the chief executive of the country’s biggest party. You try surviving on £100,000 a year. It isn’t easy.

“Oh and by the way, any insinuation that my ex-wife Nicola had anything to do with this is completely ridiculous. That money tucked under her mattress was already there when we moved in.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to find Christopher Harborne’s phone number. I hear he gives great bribes.

“Sorry, gifts. I mean gifts.”
