Labour congratulated on classic April Fool’s ruse after announcing plan to implement genuinely left-wing policy

The Labour Party has been widely applauded this morning for its top-tier April Fool’s Day prank, after issuing a convincing press release announcing plans to implement a genuinely left-wing policy.
The hoax – which claimed the government would introduce a wealth tax on the UK’s richest 1% – was described by political analysts as “a masterclass in surrealist comedy” and “the most left-wing thing Labour’s done since Jeremy Corbyn pledged jam-making subsidies for the working class.”
“We just wanted to have a bit of fun,” said a chuckling Sir Keir Starmer, still wearing his novelty red tie.
“We thought, what’s the most absurd, implausible thing we could announce without people immediately spotting the joke? So we said, ‘Let’s tax the rich!’ and honestly, we cracked up. It’s got that perfect mix of satire and fantasy.”
The prank reportedly fooled several Your Party members, who experienced momentary feelings of hope, before realising the announcement didn’t include 47 sub-clauses on fiscal moderation and caveats about ‘not upsetting the CBI’.
Reaction across the political spectrum has ranged from amused to genuinely concerned. A spokesperson for the Conservative Party admitted they “almost fell for it” before realising it was April 1st.
“For a moment, we thought they were serious and that Kemi Badenoch would finally have something to go for a PMQs that didn’t leave her with that supply teacher aura.”
Financial markets briefly dipped before stabilising after it became clear Labour remains thoroughly committed to continuing Conservative policies, only with slightly less shouting.
At press time, Starmer confirmed the party’s next big prank would involve pretending to build a million social houses somewhere other than Photoshop.
