Trump fascinated with Artemis II lunar mission after discovering moon has no extradition treaty
7 months ago
Donald Trump has reportedly taken an intense and “very normal, very presidential” interest in this week’s Artemis II lunar mission after aides confirmed that the Moon currently has no extradition treaty with the United States.
Speaking from the White House lawn while pointing vaguely skyward, Trump described the Moon as “a tremendous place, really underused, nobody’s even living there, which I respect,” before adding that it could be “a fantastic option, if you think about it, purely hypothetically, which many people are saying.”
Sources close to the president say his curiosity about lunar governance began during a routine briefing on NASA’s upcoming mission, but escalated rapidly after he repeatedly asked whether “space counts as international waters, but better.”
“He got very focused,” one aide said. “At first it was questions about rockets, then suddenly it was, ‘If I’m on the Moon, who’s in charge? Nobody? Interesting… very interesting.’”
Trump later praised Artemis II as “incredible, maybe the best mission ever,” while suggesting he would be willing to “help out” by personally inspecting the spacecraft, adding, “I’ve always had a strong relationship with space. People don’t know that.”
Legal experts have confirmed that while the Moon is governed by international agreements, enforcement mechanisms are, at best, limited. This has reportedly led to what insiders describe as “a noticeable uptick” in Trump Googling phrases such as “can you pardon yourself on the Moon” and “lunar golf course zoning laws.”
Meanwhile, NASA officials insist the mission remains focused on scientific exploration, although one engineer admitted contingency plans now include “politely but firmly” preventing any last-minute additions to the crew manifest.
At press time, Trump was said to be workshopping potential slogans for a future campaign, including “Make America Great Again… From Space,” and asking whether Air Force One could be “retro-fitted with, you know, the fire at the bottom.”
