England have been declared the winners of the 1986 World Cup after FIFA overturned the result of the quarter-final game against Argentina, due to Maradona handling the ball.

With news emerging yesterday that Morocco have been declared the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations, two months after the final, due to Senegal’s controversial walk off during the game, further news has now emerged that England have been retrospectively awarded the 1986 World Cup title after a VAR review on Maradona’s goal confirmed it was handball and therefore should not have stood.

A spokesperson for the FA confirmed, “We’re grateful to AFCON for showing the world that the final whistle is no longer the definitive end to the game, and that the result of any knockout game can change months after everyone has gone home. In our case, 468 months after everyone has gone home.

“So yes, we can finally say Wohooooooooooo! We’ve won the World Cup!

“It’s only fair really, as the decision at the time was a total disgrace, and we would have definitely won the game otherwise and gone on to win the whole tournament. Easily.

“We are absolutely delighted to have won the World Cup in 1986 and the fans will be over the moon. The lads really deserve it and we can’t wait to celebrate.

“We’ll probably have a massive parade through London as soon as we can, to really celebrate, because we are World Champions! Get in!”

Asked if he remembers the other goal in the game where Maradona took on the whole England team and scored another goal we were told, “Nah, can’t remember that one”
