Man who claims to be a ‘gaslighting victim’, actually just wrong about lots and lots of things
1 year ago
A man who regularly participates in Facebook comment sections has claimed he is a “victim of gaslighting,” despite overwhelming evidence that he is simply wrong about almost everything he says.
Simon Williams, 46, whose profile picture is an AI-altered version of himself on a Union Jack, insists he is being psychologically manipulated every time someone gently corrects him with facts.
“They’re trying to make me doubt reality!” said Williams, in response to a thread where he confidently stated that wind turbines cause autism and the moon landing was staged by the BBC in order to distract from the invention of decimalisation.
“When I say 5G caused COVID and some smart-arse with a PhD tells me I’ve fallen prey to misinformation that targets the low-IQ, that’s not debate – that’s gaslighting. I know what I know. I watched a YouTube video about it. Twice.”
Friends and family say this is part of a wider pattern, as Williams has previously claimed he was being gaslit after being told:
– the Earth is not flat
– The Nazis were not ‘socialists’
– Brexit has made things worse
“Simon’s not being gaslit,” said one exasperated commenter in the latest thread in which he’s participating.
“He’s just profoundly, almost artfully, mistaken. About everything. It’s like watching a man sprint through a hall of facts with his eyes stapled shut.
“He will no doubt claim the very existence of this article is yet further proof he’s being gaslit about everything.”
Experts believe Williams is not alone. “Social media has given rise to a generation of people who confuse being corrected with being oppressed,” said a sociologist. “To them, basic reality is a personal attack.”
At press time, Williams was reportedly recovering from another bout of gaslighting after being told that deliberate or otherwise, Elon Musk did, in fact, do a Nazi salute.
