Kanye West has sparked major outrage after suggesting that watching the Eurovision Song Contest was a “choice”.
“When you hear people complaining about Eurovision but still watching it. Still watching it?! That sounds like a choice,” he said told his millions of followers on Twitter.
It’s believed that West was responding to Simon Williams, a 38-year-old dad-of-two, who’d earlier tweeted “Bloody Eurovision is on again this weekend! Stop broadcasting it so-called BBC! Brexit means Brexit! #Brexit.”
The rapper’s comments come just a week before he launches his new fashion line, Emperorz Nu Yeezys, which is made of a revolutionary new material that can only be seen by geniuses.
Although some have praised West for starting a long overdue conversation about Eurovision, others have reacted angrily to his remarks.
“Given his newfound interest in politics, I suppose it was only a matter of time before Kanye commented on Eurovision,” said Nev Burke, NewsThump’s Eurovision correspondent.
“In reality, very few people watch Eurovision because they want to watch Eurovision. Rather, they do it because they don’t want to be excluded from the Monday morning conversation at work about how rubbish it was.
“The problem with West’s comments is that they normalise dreadful music. Although, judging by his last album, he’s been trying to do that for a while.
“I just hope that the controversy surrounding West doesn’t overshadow the 15th anniversary of Jemini receiving nul points. They sacrificed their musical careers for the UK and deserve to be properly remembered,” added Mr Burke.
