Nick Clegg has claimed to have ‘no recollection’ of ever being Deputy Prime Minister after newspapers today printed allegations that he served in government.

Responding to a story in The Sun newspaper saying that he had been second in charge of the government and met the Queen on several occasions, Clegg issued a statement that he is ‘sure it’s the sort of thing he would remember’.

Describing the claims as ‘nonsense’, Clegg insisted there were no records of him ever holding such a position and challenged The Sun to prove it.

“If I’d been Deputy Prime Minister someone would have made a note of it”, he told us.

“There would have been newspaper stories or photographs or something like that, but I can’t remember it happening and there’s absolutely no evidence to back up their story.

“Seriously? Like anyone would believe the Queen would talk to me. I was leader of the Liberal Democrats.”

The Sun have stood by their claim, and suggested they may have access to voicemail messages left for David Cameron in which the former Lib Dem leader describes himself as “Nick Clegg. Yes, Clegg. Deputy Prime Minister. You must have heard of me.”

When asked if the Queen had told Mr. Clegg that Britain should leave the EU, a Palace spokesman said “Nick who?”
