Mark Zuckerberg has signalled the end of third-party fact checkers on Meta platforms by offering every user $1000 to stop sharing fake news and to write Community Notes instead.

The move comes after Zuckerberg realised his business needed to bend the knee before the new Trump administration, and that in order to do that he would have to end the concept of objective truth on his platforms.

Zuckerberg spoke to users on his Facebook page, “Third-party fact checkers have let us all down, which is why I’m going to pay each of you $1000 to start writing Community Notes. It’s only right, I’ve been using your content to train our AI models for years, so it’s about time I gave you something back.

“All you need to do is write the odd Community Note explaining how actually no, black people don’t have smaller brains, or that actually yes, Hitler did kill a lot of jews, and then you’ll get your $1000 check.

“There are some people who believe the best way to counter a highly-lucrative and persuasive lie is to ask volunteers to address those claims directly, for free. But I’m not an idiot. I realise without payment such a system is destined to fail.

“So you’re all getting paid for your time. Obviously.”

Facebook user Simone Williams told us, “It’s a good offer, but I’ve only got so many hours in the day, and I’ve got another offer here where I can get a brand new Range Rover, and all I have to do is share this Facebook post from this brand new page that is definitely 100% legitimately from Range Rover.

“So keep your money Zuck, I’ll take the Range Rover!”
