Tim Farron has quit as leader of the Liberal Democrats after revealing that people’s intolerance of his intolerant views is something he’s no longer prepared to tolerate.
Announcing his resignation, Mr Farron revealed that remaining faithful to Christ is incompatible with his own description of himself.
“Thinking gay sex is bad is only homophobic if you don’t believe in God,” he said.
“If I can’t use my faith to excuse my opinion on gay people then we’re kidding ourselves if we think we live in a tolerant, liberal society.”
Church leaders have praised Mr Farron and insisted he shouldn’t have to choose between his faith and politics.
“It’s deeply regrettable that he is unable to hold religious beliefs that contradict what his party is supposed to stand for,” said a spokesbishop.
“Contradictions are what religion is built on, and they should be respected.”
