Man finally understands concept of unconscious bias after learning that Bluey is a girl

Father of two Simon Williams has a newfound appreciation for the concept of unconscious bias after learning that the titular character of Australian children’s cartoon Blue, is, in fact, a girl.

Williams told us, “I just assumed it was a boy, given the adventures he – sorry she – goes on, and how she’s, you know, blue.

“My kids are 6 and 4 and they absolutely love Bluey. The fact that season 3 was released on Disney+ during the school holidays is perhaps the best thing to happen so far this year for parents of young kids.

“But it’s taken until season 3 for me to realise that Bluey is actually a girl. As is the younger one, Bingo.

“I’m not sure it says anything good about me that I’d not only assumed she was a boy, but that I continued to do it for the two years since my eldest first started watching it.

“Christ, what other incorrect assumptions have I made due to my inherent and unconscious biases?

“I’ll be on the Lionesses bandwagon next!”

Meanwhile, Simon’s wife Sharon told us, “It’s a step in the right direction, but I worry for him if this all comes flooding at him at once. For now, we’ll take it slowly, and start with children’s cartoons.

“He quite likes a lot of Fleetwood Mac songs, but I don’t have the heart to tell him about Stevie Nicks.”
