Paul Gascoigne has arrived at 10 Downing Street with a fishing rod and bucket of KFC, signalling the likely end of Liz Truss’s stand-off with the Tory parliamentary party.

The former England star told police he was a friend of the prime minister, and that he only wanted to help.

As one witness explained, “Gazza was pretty insistent he could get her to step aside without the need for a more violent intervention, but honestly, I was worried he would get tackled to the ground by an irate Therese Coffey.

“He made it as far as the door, but no one has let him in yet.”
