Dominic Raab dismissed warnings of Taliban resurgence as ‘Project Fear’

The Foreign Secretary ignored an FCO risk assessment which stated the Taliban could rapidly return to power because he felt it was just another example of Project Fear’s ludicrous pessimism.

Dominic Raab was warned back in July that the Taliban were likely to return to power as soon as US troops withdrew from Afghanistan. The Foreign Secretary dealt with this blatant piece of scaremongering ‘intelligence’ by going on holiday.

“I didn’t get where I am today by worrying about facts and realistic outcomes predicted by so-called experts,” said Mr Raab. “Especially things which would make me look bad if they came to pass.

“Should we have started evacuating personnel earlier? Absolutely not! Why should I have listened to the words of some namby-pamby fear mongers – the very worst type of mongers?

“Monger as much war, fish and iron as you like, but fear and scares? No, I won’t stand for it!

“Do I reject being unable to read vital intelligence memos because I had sun cream in my eyes? Yes, with the benefit of hindsight I should have used a spray-on sunscreen.

“And yes, by complete coincidence some of the absurd Project Fear claims have now come to pass and the Taliban do indeed appear to have rapidly taken over Afghanistan. I suppose. From a certain point of view.

“But the reason our evacuation was so chaotic was actually all because of… Covid.

“There was, um, a shortage of pilots because they were all being pinged and having to self-isolate and stuff.

“Now if you’ll excuse me, I can’t take any more difficult questions because I’m off to the Maldives for a month.

“Byesie bye!”
