“We’ll take the secret to the grave” – Euro 96 squad refuse to shed light on mystery of Gazza’s Scotland goal celebration

Gazza vs Scotland goal remains a mystery

It might be twenty-five years since Gazza’s iconic goal against Scotland in Euro 96, but England fans are no nearer to uncovering the mystery of his pitchside celebration, as players from that squad promised to take that secret with them to the grave.

England fan Simon Williams told us, “I was fifteen at the time, and I loved that goal, but I’d be lying if I said it hadn’t bothered me ever since that I didn’t understand the goal celebration.  It’s one of the most iconic sporting moments in modern history, but those involved just won’t discuss it. It’s absolutely infuriating.

“Over the years I’ve gone through various possible explanations for the celebration, none of which I have been able to confirm with the players involved.

“Was it a tribute to our brave firefighters and their preferred method of fire suppression? Was it a comment on global warming and the increased thirst to be brought on by climate change? Was it an illustration of how important Gazza thought his teammates were and that without them he would die of thirst?”

The man with the assist for Gazza’s goal, Jamie Redknapp, told us, “You know me, I’ll say and do literally anything if gets me on the television, but I’m afraid I can’t talk about that goal celebration.  What goes in the changing room, stays in the changing room. I’ve sworn an oath, and I will not discuss it – ever.”

Williams went on, “It remains one of the most enduring mysteries of English sport, and we can only hope that one day, maybe when most of that team are dead and gone, maybe, just maybe, one of the remaining few will finally reveal the celebration’s secret.”
