Opinion: I have no fucking clue what’s going on any more

Man has no idea what's going on

The government just whipped to vote down its own amendment which it had shipped to support half an hour earlier because of the Spelman amendment, but lost the vote they had whipped both for and against only to win a vote against the Malthouse amendment which was meaningless anyway.

Just an average Wednesday night in Westminster as the iceberg grinds inexorably closer. Possibly a deckchairs amendment is in order.

Parliament has taken back control but refuses to take responsibility, sequentially refusing to back leaving with a deal, back leaving without a deal, and back not leaving at all.

Everyone agrees we should leave the EU, just not like this. There has to be a better way. WTO, Malthouse, Jobs first, Spelman, Norway, Canada plus, Venezuela, Bagpuss, Cheese. They’re all just empty words now. We should leave anyway but what are realistically the only ways.

A deadline focuses the mind, and MPs run in ever smaller procedural circles desperate to avoid the fact that their only options are May’s deal, no deal, or don’t leave at all – and it’s they who must make the decision, they who must pull the trigger, and they who will be held responsible for the consequences.

This is what parliamentary sovereignty looks like. No more blaming Brussels, no more pointing at the EU bogeyman. It’s on you now, and few appear to like the spotlight.

So we have a merry go round of motions and votes and amendments and suggestions of ‘alternative arrangements’ at the Irish border, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Reality is a harsh mistress and she’s due to arrive soon. I don’t know what’s going on – but if you’re not prepared to deal with reality be under no illusions she’s not prepared to deal with you.

There are currently witterings below - why not add your own?
