Following news that the CPS will not prosecute candidates for breaching election spending laws, the Conservatives have scrapped plans to spend £100bn on building a luxury prison.
The opulent slammer, which would have included sumptuous decor and à la carte restaurant, would have housed Conservative politicians and officials who were suspected of breaches of expenses rules.
“In light of the CPS decision, we have decided that a luxury prison is no longer necessary,” said Justice Secretary Liz Truss.
“We will continue with our current policy of ensuring prisons are underfunded and overcrowded.
“We will carry out reviews of this policy as and when further police investigations into our conduct occur.”
