Following the backlash of the #OscarsSoWhite campaign in 2016, the Academy have begun weaning themselves off white people by trying a few black actors.
The awards for best supporting actor and actress went to Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali, but the best actor and actress awards were once again reserved for white people.
Trying black actors in the less supporting categories was seen by senior members of the Academy as a good method to wean themselves of white actors, rather than going full ‘cold turkey’.
However, the move was not welcomed by all members of the Academy, with one particularly disgruntled member clearly attempting to sabotage the awarding of the Best Picture by forcing an envelope containing La La Land into the hands of Warren Beatty rather than the true winner, Moonlight.
