The United Kingdom has become the first country to officially recognise parking as a sport.

The practice has had its application to be recognised approved by the home country sports councils, and participants will now be able to compete in recognised events.

Governing body Parking UK says participants can “take part whenever and wherever they want – all you need is a car, and a couple of white lines”.

“It’s not just the easy stuff you see on TV, there’s reverse parking, parallel parking. The really skilled parkers can do it in one go.”

Minister for Sport Tracey Crouch described it as a “fun, creative and innovative option” for people wanting to get out of the house and try something new.

She went on, “Points are awarded for speed and accuracy, with a difficulty factor multiplier if you pick a difficult space – say outside Tesco’s front door on a busy Saturday afternoon.

“I want people to get out there and find the sport and physical activity that appeals to them, and if that means the nation also gets better at putting it between the sodding white lines, then all the better.

“The sport promotes spacial awareness and uses the nation’s great outdoor carparks as places to develop in, and I encourage people to don their driving gloves and give it a go.”
