England manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that his 26-man squad for this Summer’s European Championships will be practising their disappointed faces during training sessions.
Hodgson was talking to reporters about the preparations his players faced before the tournament begins next month.
“Of course, you can’t recreate the pressure that goes with looking dejected at a major tournament, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try and prepare,” he revealed.
“We’ve spent a lot of time standing with our hands on our hips, shaking our heads, using our shirts to wipe away tears and practising interviews where we can’t put our finger on what went wrong.”
The former Fulham, Liverpool and West Brom manager went on to reveal he had no fears about using young players with little experience in looking desolate at international level.
“I’m confident that the players who have no tournament experience have what it takes to look crestfallen at the highest level,” he said.
Hodgson’s England team well-prepared
With their opening game against Russia just twenty-six days away, England captain Wayne Rooney told reporters that the experienced players will help the younger members of the squad cope with the pressure of looking forlorn.
“There’s a big difference between looking disconsolate in the Premier League and looking inconsolable at a European Championship,” he said.
“Joe Hart and James Milner have spent a lot of time with the younger lads watching Turner & Hooch and Marley & Me on DVD.
“If you fail to prepare then be prepared to fail.”
