A 27-year-old man from Surrey has decided to delay becoming a committed Leicester City fan for a couple of months, just to be on the safe side.

The delay is in case their recent staggering run of good form and results comes to a shuddering halt, leaving him with egg on his face.

Phillip Carter, an unmarried painter and decorator, has pledged allegiance to all five clubs to have won the Premier League since its inception in 1992.

These include Chelsea, the current holders, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Blackburn Rovers – although Mr Carter didn’t bother investing in a shirt for the latter: “In case it was a one-off and they became shit again”.

When Mr Carter appeared at his door yesterday in a blue polo neck sweater, he told reporters “If Leicester keep winning and start to pull clear at the top after Christmas I’m definitely going to start supporting them.

“It’s a bit early at the moment though, so I’m sticking to being a Man City fan who has always had a soft spot for Arsenal.”

When asked if the choice of colour of his jumper was based on Leicester’s recent good run and also on Manchester City’s strong challenge for the title, he said, “Yeah, but it might also come in handy if Everton or Chelsea win The Cup.”
