I didn’t know that I knew about thing I didn’t know about, insists Clegg

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has moved quickly to deny claims of a cover-up over the alleged inappropriate behaviour of the party’s former chief executive, Lord Rennard, by insisting that he didn’t know that he knew that he didn’t know.

Mr Clegg released a statement yesterday evening making it clear that what he knew was similar to knowing, but predominantly involved not knowing.

“When I was made aware of these allegations it was crucial that I acted quickly to become unaware of them,” he said.

“I spoke with Lord Rennard about what had been alleged, but I’m unaware of what I said and I can categorically state that I don’t know if that meeting occurred.”

Clegg unaware he was aware

The deputy prime minister went on to insist that what he didn’t know had been put to Lord Rennard in 2008 by his then-chief of staff Danny Alexander.

“He was warned that whatever it was he doing, he mustn’t do whatever that was again,” he said.

“Danny knows this, but he was clearly unaware of it at the time.”

Deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats Simon Hughes was also clear that he had no idea about rumours that he knew about.

“What I knew and what I didn’t know are the same thing,” he said.

“It’s important that we make it absolutely clear that we had no idea that we knew about these allegations.

“People should be in no doubt whatsoever that we simply don’t have a clue.”
