The reason for Diane James’s sudden resignation as the leader of UKIP was today revealed to be that she was filmed in a Telegraph sting saying that “really immigration is fine”.

Caught by hidden cameras, Ms James made a series of embarrassing admissions about the cultural contributions made by immigrants and reeled off statistics about the net profit that Britain has made from immigration.

Ms James has released a statement giving an unreserved apology for her actions: “I admit that my actions were in no way befitting of a UKIP politician.

“These views were absolutely my own and in no way represent those of the United Kingdom Independence Party.

“I now accept that although there may be clear statistical evidence about the benefits of immigration, basing policy on facts has no place in UKIP.”

Interim leader Nigel Farage reacted angrily, stating that this was a valuable lesson in “what happens when you let women say things”.
