Basil Fawlty’s iconic Austin 1300 Estate goes up for auction

Basil Fawlty’s iconic red Austin 1300 Estate, driven by John Cleese in the famous sitcom, is to due to be auctioned on Wednesday.

There is already significant interest in owning a piece of small-screen history, and the car will be sold alongside some other cars including James Bond’s 1964 Aston Martin DB5.

Max Girardo, from RM Auctions told us, “This is the exact same model driven by John Cleese in the iconic Fawlty Towers episode ‘Gourmet Night’.”

“It’s also worth noting that many of the features used in the television show are still in place.”

“Bidders will notice that it still fails to start when the ignition key is turned, and it also bears the tell tale signs of the ‘damn good thrashing’ it was given during its most famous scene.”

Car auction

Organisers are expecting it to fetch over £350, up to ten times the value of a normal Austin 1300 Estate in today’s market.

Mr Girardo continued, “This isn’t about a owning car that was on TV many years ago and was driven by a fictional character.  This is about owning a piece of entertainment history.”

“You simply can’t put a price on turning up to an event in the same car once driven by Basil Fawlty.”

“Well, actually you can, it’s about £350. Oh, plus the hire of the flatbed truck to carry you there.”
