Iran’s Guardian Council says it is ready to recount all of the fake ballots from Friday’s presidential poll, which has led to three days of unrest on the streets of Tehran.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election is being contested by just about everyone who actually managed to vote, and also his main rival Mir Hossein Mousavi who is seeking a rerun.
However, Iran’s ruling Guardian Council have said that they are happy to manage a compromise whereby they recount all of the fake ballots as many times as Mr Mousavi wants.
“We have listened to the people,” said council chairman Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati Massah.
“And we are keen to show we are not above public opinion, and as such we will recount every single fake ballot collected on Friday,”
“We will even count some of the ballots which are only being filled in as we speak.”
As the West watches the drama unfold, US President Barack Obama has spoken of his hope for a peaceful settlement.
“I sincerely hope that this is resolved peacefully, and that the winner is the one least likely to build and point nuclear weapons in our general direction.”
“Remind me again, which one is it that hates us the least?”
